SOLAR PATH
Solar Path is an urban design/ landscape installation undertaking in the Tuscany region of Italy. The energy company Enel, second largest in the country, needed direction and guidance for what it can do with some of it's geothermal plants and company towns that were no longer viable as part of its business model. Office p.S. did an in-depth study of the sites and historic medieval towns and presented Solar Path, based off the idea of eco-tourism. Serving as a connector between the well preserved medieval hilltop town of Castelnuovo and the beautiful natural environment of the valley floor below, Solar Path will allow access for visitors, tourists,and even locals to take self guided tours of the natural resources that surround the area. The elliptical structures are formed from recycled galvanized metal and fitted with solar panels for energy generation. The individual segments allow for strategic installation on the hilly site to minimize disturbance of natural vegetation and to best create a navigeable path in conjunction with the natural sloped contours. The path will also provide numerous vantage points to fully appreciate the evolution of the hilltop town as well as experience the different microclimates existing at different elevations. This project hopes to create many benifits to the region by bringing in a major sustainable attractor as well as a positive economic benefit based on re-interpretation of resources.
